# 006: Tech Writers, Let’s Write Poetry

¡Hola, Tech Writing Friends!

Have you ever heard of Hugo House?

It’s a literary arts center in Seattle. They have lovely open mics, writing workshops, classes, and more.

Last month, Hugo House invited me to join their staff of writing teachers (I did!).

Yesterday, I taught with them for the first time —a Tech Poetry Workshop.

So today, I thought I’d guide YOU on how to write your own tech poem.

Teaching technology should feel fun. Creative even.

If you enjoy my tech poems on LinkedIn, why not try writing one yourself?

How to Write a Technology Poem

  1. Pick a technology topic: Choose what you want to teach or explore. (Ex: APIs)

  2. Narrow it down: Specify the aspect of the topic. (Ex: Best practices in API design)

  3. Write an explanation: Summarize your topic in simple terms. (Ex: Some best practices for API design include consistency, versioning, error handling, security, and documentation.)

  4. Find a personification analogy: Compare your topic to a human characteristic. (Ex: APIs are like an amigo who keeps your secrets [security] and tells you when you mess up [error handling].)

  5. Write your poem!

Examples of Technology Poems

Check out some of my tech poems for inspiration on personifying technology:

Tech Poetry Prompts

Try these to get started:

  • “Write a poem about how the Internet works.”

  • “Write a poem about ‘The Cloud’.”

  • “Write a poem about robots that help in daily life.”

Choose a personification metaphor that feels right, and let your imagination take over!

Your Turn, Fellow Poet!

Pick a tech topic, personify it, and write your own tech poem.

Technology isn’t just lines of dry, boring code—it’s a story waiting to be told.

Hasta luego,

Quetzalli
